From jct Hwy 182 & Hwy 395: Go 1/2 mi N on Hwy 395, then 7 mi S & W on Twin Lake Rd.
Highly disappointed.
This was the worst camping experience I've ever had in the 27 years I've been hiking and backpacking all over the country. I've been camping with my family at Doc and Al's most of my life and always had a great time, even though the campsites are kind of close-it didn't matter. There's great fishing an hiking all over.
This experience was different. It started with some invasive/rude neighbors who poorly communicated, the staff was not helpful at all when we needed it , and last but not least the main manager Julie. Julie was friends with our invasive neighbors so of course we were made out to be the bad guys when any problems arose. Lots of problems arose.
Our neighbors took up two campsites with two 25 foot trailers, three giant tents, five cars, and about 15 people. It looked and sounded liked a tailgating party. Our campsite and personal space was invaded. I personally try to stay as considerate as I can when camping so close, so everybody has a good time. These people were different. They were defensive from the beginning and up to the end when one of the women yelled at my mom, "do you have a problem!", while she was waiting for me to put my shoes on so we could go on a walk. From there a physical fight between the neighbors almost broke out. Absolutely horrible. The younger man working there is the son of the main manager Julie, so there was no point in letting manager know because they were all friends and family!
Absolutely terrible management and I will never be recommending anyone there again.
After reading all the reviews, seeing all the pictures and speaking to the wonderful host several times while working on our summer vacation plans I knew I wanted my family to stay here. We are a family with four children and our nine year old is disabled, scoots on the floor when she is not in her wheelchair and she had a grand time! Everyone was friendly and family oriented, we get weird looks everywhere we go but no one here looked at her any different. Six months later my three year old still pretends that he sees a deer, and makes camfires in our backyard. The host complimentary upgraded us to a two bedroom cabin and it was rustic, cozy and very charming. After spending four nights here I understand why people have been coming here for decades. I'm working on planing another trip there now, so that my family will be saying the same thing. The whole city is very friendly and laid back, I definitely recommend anyone wanting to disconnect from the world (literally because cell phone service is not happening unless you come down a few miles.... But you won't miss the no service!) connect with nature, and breathe fresh air to come here for a few days! I didn't want to leave and even started looking to see if any homes were for sale!
I went here years ago when I was younger with my parents and I had a wonderful time there I still remember and it is a nice place to stay, We camped there we brought camping equipment along with a I believe it was a tent/trailer and we had relatives along with us they were my Aunt and Uncle on my mom's side and we all had a wonderful time there we stayed there for about a week and the service was good the facilities were nice and we were able to fish swim as well as do whatever else there was to do there while we stayed there. All in all we had a great time and I highly recommend it. and also it is close to some good hunting grounds if you like hunting but mainly there is great fishing there.
We rented one of the small rustic cabins for the first time (we usually tent camp), and it was very nice. It was more comfortable than a tent, but it still felt like camping with all the cooking being done outside on a stove or bbq. We were nice and warm when sleeping. Staff is very welcoming and friendly. Would definitely do it again.
Doc and Al's closed due to forest service not renewing lease. Part of campgrounds, (3 acres) , are on forest service land. What a shame the forest service would put them out of business.
