great mtb trails and dispersed camping. unmatched views in the mid atlantic.
Beautiful area the dispersed camping spots are really nice. Hiking Hawk Ridge Loop has beautiful views and there are lots of roads to explore if you have 4x4
Amazing trails. Best kept secret around!! A guy I rode with called it “technical light”. Great single track fun for different levels.
Maneuverable trails, great for a leisurely walk/hike. Biking is allowed on these trails. They are not for beginners but if you are an advanced mountain biker, you would enjoy these trails. If you are a botany enthusiast, these trails offer many types of mushroom and flower species as well.
I hiked the Hawks Ridge Loop trail, and it was excellent.
Very remote and secluded area, so you’ll have plenty of solitude (and likely no cell signal) on this hike.
The western section of the trail has all the expansive views, so take the loop counterclockwise to save them for last. Or just do an out-and-back, as the rest of the loop isn’t very scenic. Clean and maintained. The open ridge section is exceptionally scenic.
The gravel forest road heading in is easily taken in a car. A few deep bit avoidable potholes and some washboard sections, but nothing extreme.
[GPS tried to take me down an incorrect road, near “Cheat Mountain Club”. You want to take forest road 227 heading South off of route 250.]
