Camp Chowenwaw (Cho’-wen-waw), is a beautiful 150-acre site at the mouth of Black Creek, near its confluence with the St. Johns River. The Girl Scout Council of Duval County operated the site as a camp for over 70 years. The original cabins and the Big Cabin were built with federal aid using logs cut on site. The camp opened on July 1, 1933. Camp Chowenwaw has played an important role in the lives of three generations of young women in Northeast Florida. Thousands of campers have stayed at the Camp; many have gone on to be leaders in our community. In 2006, Clay County purchased the camp from the Girl Scouts of Gateway Council with assistance from Florida Communities Trust using Florida Forever funds. It is now a public park offering a variety of recreation including trails, camping and overnight cabins, nature programs, fishing pier, canoe launch, picnicking, swimming pool, museum, playground, and meeting rooms. The Park is managed as a conservation, historic preservation, and outdoor recreation area.
This is a great place for a short, casual, relaxing walk in nature. The trails are short but I didn't mind because the grounds have character. You can camp there and rent cabins too. How awesome! There a pool for guest there too.
It was built in 1932 and more land was added in the 1950's. It certainly has a late 50's feel to it. It's pet friendly too.
Great place to camp with kids. Not a huge park but has something for everyone. Trails are nice and tailored to kids
We love this campground! We came here with our Cub Scout pack for a weekend trip. The grounds are kept clean and the bathrooms were very clean. We stayed in the tent camping area and our camp spot was very spacious and we loved the kitchen area with the fridge and stove. The only thing that was negative was there is a neighbor nearby who bumps their music all hours of the night. They had the bass going Friday night all night and Saturday all night. It sounded like an all night nightclub. When we were packing up on Sunday morning, we could still hear the music so loud and the bass thumping. It was very hard to sleep. I can’t believe someone hasn’t called the cops on this person or people. There is a residential neighborhood next to the camp, so you would think someone would have reported it by now. Besides being kept up all night long by this persons music, it was very enjoyable. The hiking trails are wonderful and we loved hiking to the pier. We would definitely come back here, but maybe stay in one of the cabins next time.
lovely little park and campgrounds, the community fire pits are a wonderful idea, so many trails to wander and beautiful scenery. the main trail is wide and well packed, I was able to get through in my wheelchair easily (except for a few pesky roots), can't wait to come back here to camp!
This is an amazing park to visit for just a day out with family or you can also camp in tents or rent one of their amazing rustic type cabins some of the cabins are like tree houses. They have a public pool a playground picnic and grilling. Many nice nature trails to walk on including a long dock out to the water where you can fish. They also have a really nice bathroom facility with changing stalls. You can rent canoes and spend the day on the black creek enjoying nature. Overall the park is a family kid and pet friendly place to visit.
