The 273-acre area is located along the South Fork of the Maquoketa River. The unique beauty of Northeast Iowa is very evident here with limestone rock outcroppings, upland timber, flood plain, wildlife, and panoramic scenery. Wildlife food plots are planted throughout the area to help wildlife survive harsh winters. Primitive camping is available by the river with restroom facilities nearby. This area is a convenient stop for canoeists traveling down the Maquoketa River.
primitive camping (walk-in or paddle-in, tent only)
pit toilets
There are three access points provided to the area:
Parking Lot off County Road E17, just east of Canton
Parking Lot off County Road 30th Avenue (1/2 mile south of E17)
River access off the south fork of the Maquoketa River (between bridge in Canton & Millertown bridge on 30th Ave) - Part of the Maquoketa River Water Trail
Great secluded location and the best view in Iowa hands down. If you don't mind a decent hike and appreciate quiet camping this should be your next destination. Good trails, fire pit picnic tables, plenty of room for hammocks or tents. Bathrooms are not for the faint of heart but are very great to have.
Road in was too rough for a standard car in Oct 2021-been much better in the past. Nice isolated pla e and trail down to the river. There is a great bluff lookout 1/2 the way to the river
Great place to go for a hike, camping or boating. Beautiful views, timber, and wildlife.
Easy 5 star view, but easy 1 star road to get there. USE CAUTION bringing a regular car. My Hyundai Sonata got through fine but was nerve wracking driving on it with the weeds smacking the underside of the car, very loose gravel path, and bouncing all over the place.
