I think this is a fun place to explore. Follow the Arch loop trail, you can find those arches. The heart arch should really be called Kiss Rock. It is fun to find the Lathe Arch which is hiding from your sight. You need to drive a little bit to find the Eye of Alabama hills. Cyclops Arch is further away. All are unpaved road, but accessible.
Loved this place! I camped here with my son for 1 night. Scenery was amazing. Plenty of rocks to climb, arches to see, and dirt roads for driving.
The place is full of picturesque views. The road is broad but washboarded. Note to be courteous and not dust out others by keeping speeds down. Avoid taking side streets as they deadend on hilltops as single tracks or abandoned mine roads.
Fun place to hike. Some roads are dirt/mud so be prepared. Also, the weather can change abruptly so keep an eye on the sky. We had to leave quickly when a freak snowstorm blew in. A film crew was there, and they packed up quickly and headed out. You can stay in Lone Pine for the night. You are in the foothills of Mt Whitney so the scenery is amazing.
