The 100-mile White Rim Road loops around and below the Island in the Sky mesa top and provides expansive views of the surrounding area. Four-wheel-drive trips usually take two to three days, and mountain bike trips usually take three to four days.
Under favorable weather conditions, the White Rim Road is moderately difficult for high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicles. The steep, exposed sections of the Shafer Trail, Lathrop Canyon Road, Murphy Hogback, Hardscrabble Hill, and the Mineral Bottom switchbacks make the White Rim loop a challenging mountain bike ride, and require extreme caution for both vehicles and bikes during periods of inclement weather. During high water conditions on the Green River, sections of road on the west side can flood, making a complete loop impossible.
Bicyclists and four-wheel drivers must stay in designated campsites. There are 20 individual campsites arranged in 10 camping areas. There are toilets at each area. When there is more than one campsite at a location, they are generally positioned to be out of earshot and, as much as possible, sight of each other. Each campsite accommodates up to 15 people and 3 vehicles. Motorbikes and trailers are considered vehicles for these group size limits. Keep all camp activities within the post that mark the campsite boundaries. Campfires are not permitted.
You must have an overnight permit for all overnight trips along the White Rim.
Takes about 5 hours from the top of Schafer. Oct-2022 best view, both the canyon and the sky. Always bring toilet paper.
Absolutely amazing. Plan on going back. It's very much off the beaten path, but the view of the stars is so worth it. There are rocks to use to stake your tent, so you'll be fine.
This is simply the best campground on the White Rim Trail. It is located about 3 miles off the main road and located on the point of the White Rim that overlooks the confluence of the Colorado and Green Rivers. Although, you can't see the confluence from the overlook, the panorama you'll have is perhaps the best in all of Canyonlands National Park.
Hands-down the most beautiful views from any campsite I've ever stayed in, and I've camped in Moab numerous times including the White Rim trail. This site is a step above on both views and privacy. There is only one site at the end of a 1.4 mile road. You are ALL alone. The expected amazing star viewing. Clear line of sight for sunrise and sunset.
The bathroom is not nice, with rat droppings and black widow webs, but it's not enough to keep this site from being 5 star.
Spent one night here in late-April 2021. Fantastic campsite!! It is a rough 1.5 miles each way off the White Rim 4x4 Road. Huge cliff on the edge of the campsite, wear your headlamp and watch your step at night! Beautiful sunrise location! We did not have windy conditions but other say this campsite can get quite windy. Little mice come out of the bushes at night and will get into your food, they are sneaky and quick, keep your food sealed and closed at all times! A backcountry reservation permit is required with the Canyonlands National Park office, plan in advance as this is approx. the halfway point on the White Rim Road and this site is consistently booked.
