Campsite: Rock Candy Mountain Trailhead

Trail itself with extensive network of overlanding trails is excellent. The crowds of side by side users ignoring off road driving etiquette and nearly colliding head on with me by flying too fast around a blind curve? Not so much. Be prepared to contend with those who don’t know that trail etiquette exists. But other than that, fantastic place you could spend weeks exploring.

Campsite: Manitou Lodge Primitive Sites

Where do I even start! I booked a stay here for a brief visit with my parents who flew in from Virginia. I wanted to have access to both the coast, as well as a good launch pad for an early morning excursion into the Ho Rainforrest, as I was hoping to beet the crowds. I wanted somewhere locally run (as I prefer supporting local when I can) and somewhere memorable.

This lodge exceeded any and all expectations I had. It was peaceful, even when fully booked. And the owner/operator lives on site and is incredibly responsive and supportive as a host.

We had a last minute planned power outage and I became concerned due to my mother needing medical devices at night. Not only was the host completely empathetic towards my concerns, but assured me that he was available any time of night should an emergency arise. Lanterns and flashlights were provided, and clear instructions and guidelines on how to navigate during the outage.

The power outage ended being basically a non-issue, and the rest of the trip went off without a hitch!

To address some of the concerns I’ve seen in other reviews:

- there are security cameras present on the property. They make no attempt to hide this, and at NO TIME did I feel my privacy was being invaded. If anything I felt secure knowing that the property was being monitored.

- the lodge space is a shared. The rooms are private, but the common area is shared. Again, this is not hidden, and is clearly stated in the booking. It offered a chance to connect with your fellow travelers, and if you really want privacy, the grounds are plenty large to spread out on.

- I found the rooms to be in incredible condition and immaculate. There was clearly attention to detail, and everything was very well thought out.

- this is a historical building. It is not the modern spa retreat that I think a lot of people build up in their mind. It’s magical, quiet, and unique. If you want luxury resort amenities, go find a luxury resort to stay in.

- at no time did I ever feel the host was difficult to get a hold of. Response times were ten minutes or less, and any concerns I had were addressed immediately.

- the lodge is on a reservation, on one of the most isolated peninsulas in the united state. There are dining options in Forks, and an awesome burger place up the road. But this is also clearly stated on the website, so plan your meals accordingly. This is a place for solitude and retreat, not night life.

I’m only sorry I didn’t write this review sooner! I cannot recommend this lodge enough. I plan on booking a stay for March and look forward to sharing this space with my sister.
