This is a great view from the top of the dam at 350 feet. It's amazing the dam was built in 1911. Unfortunately, they overlaid the masonry walls in 1996 with ...concrete which makes it look like any other dam now.
This is likely the most impressive sights in Big Bend National Park, up to 1000-foot-high vertical cliffs, there are not too many places like that in the rest of the US. The trail is less than a mile long and the views are gorgeous. You may have to cross a small muddy stream to get to the cliffs depending on the time of the year. These massive limestone cliffs are the sedimentary remains of an ancient shallow sea, and they were carved by the Rio Grande over the last 60 million years (they call it Rio Bravo in Mexico).
12 miles round trip, 6700 feet of elevation gain with the South climb trail. Out of all the mountains I have done, this was one of the hardest. I did the hike in July and the last mile was sheer torture due to the extreme steepness of the climb. The snow didn't help as I had no snow equipment and I was wearing shorts, however with a lot of breaks, I made it to the top. Of course, with the snow covering the paths, we weren't following switchbacks if there were any, we were basically climbing the slope. At the top though, after having finally recovered, the views were fantastic. The way down was much more fun sliding.....
