Campsite: Pocahontas State Park
We camped 16 times on 2023 and this campground is one of our top 5 stops! We actually visited AFTER the water park was closed (9/8-9/10). There so much ground to cover whether you are walking or biking. Our son loved playing at the park across from our RV spot. The sites were spaced out really good. We never had any issues with the neighboring campers. I definitely recommend bringing your bikes! We seen deer on one of our rides. But there is ALOT to see. If you're into nature, this is the place. We walked the dogs alot too. They have a museum on site that was fun to visit. The water park is huge and looks amazing. However, we were told it gets very busy since they are open to the public and not just the campers. I thought that was a good piece of information to know. Coming in the cooler months will help with getting overheated on the various trails. We are actually going back March 2024. They have a few camp stores onsite with a good variety of things. We enjoyed Kayaking the area too.
Campsite: Kiptopeke State Park
This campground is great. The sites are big and there's alot to do. We enjoyed riding our bikes and walking the trails. We seen dolphins in the water and it was really quiet. The beach was clean and seeing the ships out in the water were great. Bring your bikes for exploring because you will need them or a car.
Campsite: North Bend Park
By far one of our favorite campgrounds. We had a blast playing in the water, kayaking and riding our bikes around all the campsite loops. There is no onsite store. Also if you ate close to the water, some people cut through your site to go back and forth. We did have to run to the local Walmart but it wasn't too bad.
Campsite: Chickahominy Riverfront Park
Nice and quiet campground. We did alot of fishing from the docks and beach. The sunsets over the water were beautiful. They have trails and plenty of space to ride your bikes. We will definitely bring our kayaks when we go back.
Campsite: Christopher Run Campground
We stayed at this campground back in April 2023. Initially they booked us at a site right on the ledge of a hill. There was no way we were going to attempt to park in that spot. I called them and they moved us to another spot (H10). The sites are close together and the campground is all up and down hills. I mention that because we were trying to ride bikes around (including my 4 yr. old) and it was pretty sketchy going down hill. I would recommend no bikes for kids here. There was no walk into the water access at the beach. If you had a boat or kayaks, it would be fun to get out on the water. Otherwise, the best sites were the group camping spots. They had beautiful views and so much space.
Campsite: Belle Isle State Park
The park was small and quiet, which was pretty amazing. The bathhouse was clean and no bugs. We had a spot right across from the bathhouse. Everything was spaced out pretty far so I'm glad we had our electric bikes to get around. Would definitely recommend bikes if you plan on visiting. There are corn fields everywhere! The visitor center was really nice and the gift shop was also. They do have a really cool bike station to fix your bikes if needed too!
