Campsite: Buena Vista Aquatic Recreational Area

Had a pleasant time. We were hauling through N on I5 and this was convenient just a short way off the freeway. We were able to reserve a spot online and change to a better spot when we arrived. We got campsite #18 which had hookups, pull through, picnic table and fire pit, a couple trees and beach front. Very large campsite. Pull through easily accommodated our 29 ft Class c with tow vehicle. There are lots of ground squirrels who will pilfer anything that is left unattended. I thought they were fun to watch and didn’t feed them. The water was nice. Beach had some trash, that should have been addressed better. View across the lake was lovely sunset and sunrise. Lots of flies so I’m glad we only stayed one night. Didn’t use their bathrooms so I can’t comment on that. Staff was nice. It was a weekend so there were lots of boaters there. At this camp site and all the other beach front sites that I saw, you could tie up your boat right at your campsite. Lots of people so there was music and noise but it quieted down during quiet hours. They do charge extra for dogs. I would stay again if doing the trip the same way—just an overnight on a long haul.

Note that the cool photos of artwork are from a music festival that is held there every year. Don’t expect to see that stuff when the festival is not going on.

Campsite: Wapiti Campground

Stayed here because Buffalo Bill SP was too windy and open. This campground turned out to be a real gem. It was pre-summer season (early May) so there were several spots available without a reservation. The trees weren’t leafed out yet so it was still wintery conditions and even snowed while we were there. This is on the hwy west of Cody toward the east gate of Yellowstone and there are several campgrounds, private and public, along the hwy along the Shoshone River. Wapiti is a National Forest Campground so it was cheap to stay, had a host, and was well maintained. Each campsite was spacious and pretty with lots of natural forest—trees, shrubs, flowers, the river. This stretch has loads of wildlife—we saw so many bighorn sheep! This stretch was a great fishing area due to the shallower bed—saw an osprey nab a fish! Wapiti was about 45 minutes from the East Gate of Yellowstone so it was close enough to visit the park and return to Cody to fix a flat tire in the same day. Yellowstone was covered in snow and this area was already free of accumulated snow (May 13). Each campsite has a picnic table and benches, grill, and bear locker. There was trash service. Our spot had electricity but there’s not water or sewer hook ups. We found a pull through site, there are also back in sites. The campground was about half full. It is highly recommended to have hard-sided cover such as an RV rather than a tent. There are active bears, but we were able to leave our food in the RV. Would definitely stay here again or in any of the other National Forest campgrounds along this stretch.

Campsite: Lake Shore Campground — Buffalo Bill State Park

Made reservations for Buffalo Bill SP Lakeshore campground online for early May. Reservation system was easy and staff on site were friendly. The campground is just outside of Cody toward Yellowstone along a the Shoshone River valley and mountain so the park was easy to find and the view was amazing. The campground is clean and level but spare. There’s hardly any trees, lots of grass (for walking around on?), so there’s not much in the way of shade or windbreak or privacy. Though the weather was sunny, it was very windy which made it bitter cold. The river was quite fast and high so no fishing. We had our truck and 24 ft trailer and got a spot with hook ups that was pull through which was convenient. Each spot had a picnic table/bench and grill. Most of the park was empty. We wound up leaving due to the cold and found a campsite in the woods closer to Yellowstone that didn’t have the harsh wind or harsh sun. Since we had paid though, they did let us come back to use the dump station during our reserved days.
