This is a very low spot on the bank of the Rio Grand. It took a lot of walking through the bushes and brush to get to the river, but it’s close, just not easy to get to. As it is low, it’s very sandy like a beach, this caused a few issues with getting sand everywhere. The trade off for being so low was there was not much wind, and it was very quiet. However, this made for more bugs nothing me. There was a pleasant surprise, I had a horse walk up to me as I was getting my camp ready for the night. This location has 2 camping spots, a JR1 and a JR2. Look for the signs.
Wonderful spot with a great view of the mountains and the river down below. It was a little windy here, which kept the bugs away, and it’s rocky so there is not as much dust as some of the other camps. It’s very difficult to access the river from here, as it’s a bit of a cliff, but the views are spectacular. This seemed to be a quiet spot, I could only hear the water of the river running.
This is an amazing camping spot! Be aware, there are 2 or 3 camping spots, and if you want this one, be sure to ask for the one closest to the river! This is Rio Grand access! From her you can walk in the river, it’s less than knee deep. Listen to the soothing sound of the river flowing all night! I can’t say enough about this great location! The campsite is about 50ft from the river.
This camp is right off Black Gap Rd. It’s possible that you could get some traffic through here, however, as Black Gap Rd is a very difficult rd, the traffic should be light.
