Very close to the interstate highway, but still quiet enough to camp. One of two water fountains was working in late May. Wet ground in some sites but others were sandier and drier.
Quite rustic, some sites offer ample surrounding vegetation and spacing for good privacy. Several walk-in tent sites with a very short walk from car to campsite are the most private sites on this property.
There's no designated beach here. Part of the shoreline is suitable for swimming, but certainly not the best swimming area you'll find on this national forest.
Several sites have elaborate fire rings with upgraded cooking features not commonly found in a national forest campground.
This campground sees relatively low use. You should be able to find an open site without issue, even on peak season weekends. Advance reservations are accepted for some sites but you can also just show up, pick a site, and avoid the reservation system fee.
Gorgeous ridge-top campsites. Getting here requires driving several miles on gravel roads, but the whole route is completely passable in a small car.
Mid week in August there were numerous lakeside sites to choose from.
Since the Nicolet closed Sevenmile Campground, Morgan Lake seems to be the one place that can rival the ridgetop sites and good spacing and vegetation between sites that Sevenmile offered.
The campground looks to be marked for a major logging operation that could drastically change the appearance of things for a few years while the forest regenerates. As of summer 2022 the cutting hadn't started yet.
Overall, definitely worth a visit.
The first loop is very popular through most of the camping season. The back loop sees much lower use; you may have it to yourself mid-week, even in peak season. The property includes plenty of reservable and non-reservable campsites. Visitors shouldn't find any issue getting a spot, even without reserving ahead.
This state forest campground offers 16 campsites and a small swimming beach. All campsites are reservable on the DNR reservation system. Drinking water is provided at a centrally located fountain; water is not clear but tastes fine.
No sites have a lake view but all are spacious. There’s ample spacing and vegetation between most campsites.
Governor Thompson state park is just a short drive or bike ride away. Compared to the state park, campsites here cost less and the swimming beach is nicer.
Those looking for more amenities may prefer the state park which offers electric sites, showers and restrooms with running water. None of those can be found at Veteran’s Lake.
