We drove the nine miles on forest service roads to pay respects at the F4 memorial. It is very remote. If you go, plan for a couple of hours of switchbacks and long steep grades. It's worth the drive. Its a nice tribute to the two pilots who were killed in 1976. We wanted to hike to the fire tower, but it was getting dark.

Cool shelter. Passed by it but didn't stop. It is much newer than the Catawba shelter further north towards McAfee Knob. Only a mile in from 311, and plenty of tent sites. Privy is close by. A HUGE tree has fallen next to the privy. Would not have wanted to be in there when that thing hit the ground.
