About Campground

Browns Lake is a 88.1 acre, 23' deep, high elevation lake that is in a setting of forested mountains. The lake is known for its fly fishing and camping. There is a primitive boat launch on the south end. While at the lake you can enjoy fishing, camping, canoeing and viewing the cutthroat spawning run in the spring. History: Earl Broten wrote about moving up from Spokane and growing up in the town of Locke in Pend Oreille country in the early 1900’s. His stepfather staked some claims at Brown’s Lake across the Pend Oreille River, where they were looking for ways to get the ore out. That didn’t seem as successful as the fishing opportunities went though. His family would bring back large trout from Brown’s Lake. There is also a historical cabin located within the campground built by the Civilian Conservation Corps.

Directions

From Newport, follow State Highway 20 north for 15 miles to the town of Usk. Cross the bridge over the Pend Oreille River on the east edge of town and follow the Kings Lake Road (County Road 3389) 4 miles to the junction of Forest Road 5030000 (Browns Lake). Travel north on 5030000 for 4 miles to the campground entrance.

Small campground that fills up but worth the drive. Its down a long narrow dirt road with a nice cold clean lake at the end. Bug spray of course is a good idea.

Very unfortunate how the trees were all cut, including up the hillsides. You will be camping in a barren area with blazing sun instead of deep in the woods by a peaceful lake. Birds have nowhere to be anymore. It will be a lifetime until any beauty is restored. We will not pay the high fee to camp in this now very ugly place. Even the lake felt sad when we walked through last week. Tragic. Makes one sick to the stomach.

Sold for logs. :( it is sad but for some reason they are removing all the commodes and trees and it is no longer a campground. At least there aren't any NoTrespassing signs yet. Still good fishing if u bring a small boat and walk it to the lakeside. I gave 4 stars because it is an awesome place to explore. The fact that they haven't fenced it off completely means it is at least still available and free! It's not the Lake's fault. I have seen big cat tracks and bear tracks- and spotted a lot of deer of course. Beautiful area - for some reason it is all logged.
