Tent & Dry Camping
The Grand Canyon Caverns were created over 65 million years ago, Formed within the limestone that was once the bottom of an ancient inland sea that divided North America. These are the largest dry caverns in the U.S.A.
We had a great stay here. We had the whole place to ourselves and a private tour of the caverns. The camp host Valerie was very nice and welcoming. The place is a little run down and hasn't had much investment in quite some time. We kind of liked that though because you can see what it was like on route 66 during the 50s & 60s and what has happened since the freeway bypassed it. I guess what I mean is it adds to the ambiance. The caverns were amazing and easily rival Carlsbad Caverns.
Seemed abandoned. The one worker at the restaurant didn't know how to check us in. Also, there was no one to work the elevator for the cave tours. The bathrooms were all chained & locked shut, except for one without a door. Most of the RV electric hook ups we tried didn't work & we had to reset ours twice. There is a flood wash at the entrance to the RV park that made it very bumpy & difficult to get into the RV area. Could have been a cool, remote site, once upon a time. Very remote, dark sky & lots of little pine trees at the RV sites. To make it worse, there are a few people living in their vehicles at the outer edges of the park that added to our unease.
Grand Cave Caverns restaurant has some really good food. Shef makes their own burger patties, smokes chicken and pork in house, highly recommended to stop by on your way to Havasu or after.
We had a great time at this campground. The cavern tour was fun and The night sky was something to behold!
We camped here for one night on our way to the Grand Canyon. It was about 2am and we got tired when we booked a site just to get some rest. Initially it seemed pretty sketchy because we couldn’t see the campground from the road and the only lighting is near the Inn. The sights were nicely surrounded by trees and there was only one other person camping in a van but it was inexpensive and we were able to take a shower in the morning before getting on the road again. The bathroom definitely needed some cleaning. We do wish we could have toured the caverns but it was a good spot for a one night stop.
