About Campground

Bird Island Basin lies along the Laguna Madre Bay. It is open to both tent and RV camping. It has gravel sites and vault toilets. It provides access to the bay for fishing, camping, windsurfing, and kayaking. The relatively calm waters of the bay and the nearly constant breeze make Bird Island Basin one of the top windsurfing destinations in the country.

Directions

The National Seashore is located southeast of the city of Corpus Christi, Texas. Visitors to the area should head east through Corpus Christi on Highway 358. After crossing the JFK Causeway onto Padre Island, Highway 358 changes to Park Road 22. Continue about 10 miles south on Park Road 22 to reach the park entrance. After passing through the pass entrance station, go about a mile and turn right at the signs for Bird Island Basin.

Great place to stay on the bay. Not a beach, more of a parking by the water. A nice break from the beach when the wind is high.

Bring your own shade!

We camped in tents and were comfortable.

We where going to camp on North Beach but there was a coastal flood advisory so we decided to venture into the National Seashore (US fee area ) . We had to pay $25 which is a 7 day pass (no other option if your staying past midnight). The camp ground was full at Malachite Beach and decided to head to Bird Island Basin! The campsites were 90% Full all with RV’s. We had our tents After driving to the end we saw a very Faint sing that said parking only for day use and tent camping ? There are no marked camp areas for the location but there are canopy’s and a picnic table too close the water! After deliberating with my spouse we decided it was be best to head to the visitors center and verify weather or not we could camp at that location? Once we got there we had to show them the are on the map! They agreed it was ok ! We headed back and set up camp! It was great but very windy and a bit chilly my kids and wife were awesome! I recommend the area just be aware of poor signs and when you enter the park I hope you don’t have to encounter the rude park attendant who took our many and treated us like were stupid! She could of at least smiled! My dream job was to be a park ranger! She looked like she hates it!
