About Campground

Spinreel sand camping is home to the largest riding area in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. Sand camp sites at the camping area are located directly on the sand. Visitors here seek the thrill of scaling the vast open dunes, beachcombing and exploring designated sand routes surrounded by shore pine, Wax myrtle, Huckleberry and Salal. Recreation Spinreel ultimately attracts off-road vehicle enthusiasts. Thrill-seekers have a choice of riding on designated routes like the Coast Guard Trail and ATV Trail #430, or cruising in the open riding sections. Playing in the surf and beachcombing are also enjoyed activities along the Pacific. North of the Spinreel Staging Area is a beach section for horseback riders and hikers. Facilities Access to campsites is only by 4x4 vehicles via soft sand routes. Individual sites are identified by numbered posts. Each site accommodates up to five vehicles and 20 campers for tent camping. Camp only within designated sites and within 150 feet of the site marker. Sites are rustic and no toilets or campfire pits are available. Portable toilets and fire pans are highly recommended. Natural Features This dispersed camping area is on the sand in the heart of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, known for its wind-sculpted sand dunes towering up to 500 feet above sea level. The dunes cover 31, 500 acres of land, surrounded by forests and the waves of the Pacific coast. Nearby Attractions Explore the waterways of the region, including Oregon's lovely Pacific Ocean, Tahkenitch Lake and Siltcoos Lake. ADA Access: N

This is a great camp ground if you want to go on the dunes. Other than that it is crammed and there is not much to do outside of the dunes. Also the main bathroom was closed the three days I was there so we had to walk to the parking lot bathroom by the entrance to the dunes.

We've stayed at Spinreel campground several times this year and we had pleasant experiences every time. It IS a campground close to the dunes and close to an ATV rental/tour business so you have to expect the noise of the ATVs. People like to go out on night rides, so you will have engine noise at night too. The camp host, Christy is really nice and she keeps the grounds and bathrooms clean and she warns campers about potential dangers on the dunes, like when there are razorbacks. We love the dunes and really like the convenience of Spinreel campground. The sites have room for both vehicle and trailer. I've only had good experiences from other campers. They've all been respectful.

The recreation area is a nice place for families to ride. The camp host however is terrible. Her name is Karen and she is not a Oregonian. She rude and not friendly. She walks around with ear muffs on because she can’t stand the sound of peoples toys. She ruined our overall experience. This campground has potential if it had a good host

It's a nice little campground. Especially for anybody that wants access to the Oregon dunes recreational area. Most of the camping spots have room for your RV/camper and two vehicles. A lot of the campers have UTV side by sides, ATVs, sand rails, and dune buggies. You can drive right off the blacktop into the dunes. There's also a boat launch for small boats.
