The Scab Creek Recreation Area is located in a beautiful and secluded lodge pole pine setting at 8,200 feet tucked in the foothills of the Wind River Mountains. There are nine campsites with fire pits and picnic tables. This is a free site. Trail leads south through BLM lands, then into the wilderness past Scab Lake to a multitude of lovely alpine lakes. The site is open from May 1st through November 15th. There are biting flys and mosquitoes from June through mid-August. This is Bear country. Came on a Friday last minute on a road trip. Almost nobody there.
It's a trailhead camp ground. It has all to he necessary amenities (water, toilet, parking, campsites). I don't think I would spend a week there unless using it as a base for day hikes.
Quiet location, easy acess to water, great bathroom to poop in. Had a few encounters with cattle.
1) this is the cleanest bathroom I've ever seen in a campground...or anywhere for that matter!
2) the backpacking trail to little divide was awesome
3) the winds is the place to go! Love it here!
