Maintained and operated in cooperation with the Central Oregon Chapter of Oregon Equestrian Trails, this five site campground offers early season access to the Metolius Windigo Trail. Please note: Horse campgrounds have been designed to accommodate people who need to corral their horses. We have a limited number of these kinds of campgrounds and ask, out of courtesy and safety for you and the horses, to please consider camping elsewhere if you do not have a horse. We have many campgrounds nearby.
From Sisters, OR: Travel 1.7 miles west on Highway 242 (McKenzie Pass Highway), then about 3 miles south on Forest Road 15.
Off grid dry camping, no water, electricity, and limited cell service. Location is a horse camp for dedicated riders. It is possible to do rides up to or in excess of 100 miles.
Love this place but Google maps is wrong/confusing here ... Pass the tree with all the decor on it, the road turns to gravel and after it says "you've arrived" you drive farther and then turn left at the next road to get to the camp. (Ignore Google maps showing it to the right)
Remote Camping off of Mackenzie Hwy in the Deschutes Forest. Has No Facilities, Not even Water, something that could even be properly remedied by the BLM/US Forest Service but like at too many other sites, is not. However with no cost to stay it is DEFINITELY to be considered, rather than the Cold Springs Camps about 6 miles further down the road which costs $14. per night and while having a management team that regularly patrols the grounds, does not offer free chopped wood, something that would certainly increase the worthiness of the fee and eliminate the need to recklessly and unnecessarily cut down and break small trees and branches to get a camp fire. If camp fires were not allowed the campground would indeed be a breeding ground for motor homes and trailers not needing a fire or high tech campers using only canned fire products, if not empty altogether.....
Nice secluded spot to bring your horses and ride the many trails in the area
Your directions were not only short by 4/10s of a mile, it asked me to turn right where there was not a road.I saw a a road to the right about 100 ft. farther down the road so I went there and turned right since the "voice " said I had reached my destination. I followed the road about 1/2 mile but it was obvious there was no camp site. I went back to the main road. After a little exploration I found the camp site a bit farther down the road and on the LEFT. This was in the forest on a dirt road. This could have been a bad thing during the snows of winter. Usually Google maps are pretty good and I like the service. This time not so much.
