Everyone I spoke with there was courteous and helpful. New to the area, but they had ideas on interesting places to go sightseeing and enjoying nature. A good ranger station!
This location is closed due to staffing issues. The gate is closed and locked with a sign about the closure. Calls to other Tonto ranger stations are either unanswered or they don't really have answers about parking and permits at trailheads, etc. here in Payson as they say rules are different here. Ugh!
We drove 3 hours to get a senior
Pass so we can go to
lake Roosevelt. Closed for
‘Staff shortage”. You can’t get a senior annual pass online!! We will park our motorhome, put the boat in the water and I dare them to give me a ticket!!!! Globe ranger station won’t even answer the phone, get a busy signal. We will keep trying but why pay $12 a day when we can pay $60 for the whole year!
This Ranger Station is one of the nicest I have visited. They have friendly and helpful staff to sell maps, give directions and information. The lobby has a sitting area for children and books to read as well as animal tracks to identify. Items for sale included shirts, patches, books, activities and much more. On display are local animals and pottery.
For some reason, the Payson office allows large group (100+) camping in undeveloped sites, but doesn't enforce any tash or bathroom rules, and this is within a few hundred feet of the East Verde River.
