Small 450 acre lake on the Jicarilla Apache Lands.
Open from April 1 to Nov. 30 for angling with artificial flies and lures only. Limit is 3 trout per day 6 in possession.
Start from Santa Fe and take U.S. 84 north to Tierra Amarilla, head west on N.M. 95 passing Heron and El Vado Lakes and turning right following Tribal Road J8 to Stone Lake. Takes about 2 hours from Santa Fe.
This place is post-apocalyptic. The roads, ramadas, and “camp sites” haven’t been maintained in at least twenty years. The visitor’s center is closed and locked up. The bathrooms are locked as well, and at least thirty individuals dropped drawers and dumped their dookies on the doorstep of the latrines.
The wind is fierce, the bugs are thick, the lake stinks, and the geese are noisy neighbors. I recommend keeping your family far away from this dilapidated dystopian dump of a lake.
