Nice place to go camping and fishing ten thousand feet up in the mountains
Beautiful area. Far drive need a 4x4. Overall very peaceful n Beautiful.
The good: this campground is on the edge of the Cruces Basin wilderness. If you like fishing, there are several small lakes, and people we met were catching their limit of fish. On weekdays, the people were pleasant, and the campground was only 3/4 full.
However, when the weekend came, it was more of a free-for-all, with people squeezing in wherever they could find space for their car/truck/RV (the road in the campground is rough and twisty, so think twice about most RVs). The friendliness dropped a bunch, though nobody was actively rude.
There is one vault toilet for the campground. During the week, this is fine, but there were lines on the weekend. And, someone had taken a crowbar to the door, so it no longer latches.
Final resting place of “The Otter”, a world class, triple crown thru hiker who became trapped and died in this campground in the winter of 2016. RIP
