Was drizzling all the way and made for some slick spots. Trail was rather convoluted from trail marker to trail marker but it was pretty and a tiny bit of challenge in some spots for foot placement. The whole geology class made it so rather easy. No cement paths this is trekking in the rough and rolling. Definitely make a nice afternoon.
Google Maps doesn't quite do the best job getting you there, but once you figure it out the place is well marked and easy to navigate around. Should just be called Hells Half Acre trail in my opinion. No rest rooms or water, but a great place for a hike or a picnic- or both. Cool place to study volcanoes stateside!
Great hike but if you're planning to take the red poles out to the crater be prepared for a long 4 mile hike. The basalt fields get hot during the summer, so bring plenty of water to cool yourself off
The hike from the car was 5.2 mi until the lava vent. You need sturdy shoes and watch the temps. Easily add an extra ten degrees on the rocks. Verizon had service the entire time. No restrooms at trailhead as indicated. The pole indicators were difficult to follow in certain spots.
This place was great! The shorter blue loop trail was perfect for an afternoon hike with the family! Dogs too. Our small dog jad to be carried the last bit due to tender paws. Outside of that, we all had a blast! Cool place. Worth it.
