Flat Tops NW covers the southeastern part of the Blanco Ranger District (including most of the Flat Tops Wilderness) from Ripple Creek Pass to Rio Blanco County Road 10.
This scenic byway turned out to be 60 some odd miles of dirt road. Up and down, back and forth as we drove through the Flat Top Wilderness area. The roads weren’t marked very clearly and we took several wrong turns and ended up dead ending at ranches.
Awesome hiking, beautiful views, and the bathrooms were cleaned regularly and re-stocked with toilet paper the day after our arrival. Super happy with our camping experience here!
Tons of beautiful trails that meander throughout the insanely vast Flat Tops wilderness area. My first hike there was the hike through Devil's Causeway which in itself is a super cool and scary trail that's only about 10-15 feet wide with sheer cliffs on BOTH sides that drop at least a few hundred feet in the lowest places, maybe close to 1K feet in the tallest spots!! The entire hike that we hiked that day ended up being over 14 miles long and to this day is still the longest single day hike I've ever done. Funny thing is that even though it was so long and took so many hours, it felt like I simply snapped my fingers and it was already all over! Sooo much fun.
Lots of mosquitoes so definitely bring some bug spray. Super beautiful and quiet scenery and lots of water features.
Beautiful area. Make sure you check a good map, some of the roads are high clearance 4WD only, for very good reason
