About Campground

Overview

Colonial Creek North Campground in North Cascades National Park is a remote, yet bustling campground nestled in old growth forest. Located on the north side of State Route 20 near mile marker 130, there are 41 campsites that are surrounded by forest and located on Diablo Lake.

Recreation

Visitors can access several trails from within the facility, such as Thunder Knob Trail and Thunder Creek Trail. Colonial Creek North Campground is also close to several trails along State Route 20. Visitors can go boating, fishing, and swimming (although the water is a chilly 43 degrees) on Diablo Lake. Bears do inhabit the area, so care should be taken when hiking, picnicking, or camping.

Facilities

The campground is located on the northern side of State Route 20. The entire facility offers drinking water, flush toilets, garbage removal and some paved parking spaces, but most sites have uneven gravel parking. Each campsite offers a picnic table and campfire ring.

Natural Features

Colonial Creek North Campground is nestled within a thick forest containing Douglas firs, western redcedars, and western hemlocks, providing an abundance of shade for its campsites. Like its counterpart on the south side of State Route 20, Colonial Creek North Campground is on the shores of Diablo Lake, offering some access to the water. In addition to the lake, Colonial Creek itself runs along the north side of the campground, providing nearby campers with the soothing sounds of gently flowing water.

Nearby Attractions

Diablo Lake and Ross Lake overlooks are within a short driving distance from the facility. Campers who wish to learn more about the area can attend interpretive programs at the North Cascades Visitor Center in Newhalem during peak season, or participate in a variety of tours.

We used place #38. There were enough place for 2 tent only. The wood you should buy beforehand and take with you there or find some in closest towns. We love the grill- you can regulate it to be higher or lower on the fire.

Colonial Creek is a great campground! The campground is divided between north and south. The south side is more popular and has water front camping. Expect it to be louder and busier. The north side is more secluded in the woods and has much less traffic. You'll be able to access restrooms and the Thunder Knob Trail much easier. In any case, it's a great campground.

This is a very popular campsite in the North Cascades. The campground is divided into north and south sides, where the north side is much smaller in terms of the number of places. The advantage of this campground is its close proximity to the beach of Lake Diablo. We stopped near the Thunder Creek trail, which is located not far from the lake.

I had to book this 6 months in advance as soon as it became available online, which is always a challenge when camping in WA state. We stayed in camp site #5 right next to the water. This campground is incredible and we got so lucky to be by the water with easy access for our 2 kayaks. We were careful to use the bear boxes for our food. The campsites near the water are very close to each other, but it wasn't an issue and our neighbors were all very friendly. There was a fire ban at the end of July when we were there. You can expect no cell service, some wind during the day on the lake, no showers, and clean restrooms. Do note that the main road is right near by and you can hear cars and trucks going by during the day. At night it is fairly quiet though. We absolutely loved how stunning it is here and how we had access to hiking and a day trip to Winthrop!

Nice campground in a gorgeous setting. Clean bathrooms, lots of hiking trails right from the campground itself. Wonderful place for a hiking/kayaking adventure.
