Shafter is a tranquil campground next to lush meadows containing wildflowers found early in the season. The S.P. railroad tracks go right past the campground, occasionally campers can enjoy the trains as they go by. Butte Creek is regularly stocked with rainbow and brown trout and offers good fishing early in the season.
From Macdoel, CA, take US Rt. 97 south 4 miles to Shafter campground sign. Turn left at sign onto E. Bell Mtn. Rd. and go 2.2 miles to a "T" intersection. Turn right onto Old State Hwy and go 5.2 miles to campground on right.
A place I used to go to as a child still the same except grown over by trees and grass but beautiful little creek and quiet spot
Nice campground to stop at for a night. Clean bathrooms. Not a lot to do at it other than hike a bit.
Your driving through the high sage and pine desert when out of nowhere there's a campground for no apparent reason. So I stopped to see why they put one there and boy was it cool. There's a fascinating little creek running down through a beautiful Meadow. And it's really quiet, so quiet that the train coming through on the nearby tracks is a welcome distraction. Another example of Americas vast socialist network of public lands.
A very quiet, lightly used campground about 9 miles off of hwy 97, the last 5 on a well maintained gravel road. 10 campsites, each with a picnic table, a fire ring, and a pole with a lantern hook above the table. Very clean pit toilets. $10 fee ($5 for senior pass holders). Train tracks about 1/4 mile from the campground, but the trains are more a novelty and not annoying. Sites are somewhat level, some more than others. Light traffic on road. Nice campground!
This FS campground currently has pit toilets (very clean SST), and garbage/recycling receptacles. No water. It was pretty tight for our 28' trailer, only one site worked, and we couldn't back in, so not recommended for bigger rigs. The campground is between the road and the train tracks, so some traffic, but brief. You can set your clocks by the trains, first in the morning at 0530! We found it interesting, to see the products moving north and south by rail.
The views are great, birding was great, but very little water in creek or meadow, which might explain why there were few mosquitos.
Doesn't seem to get much use, but at $5 for Senior pass holders, you can't beat it!
