Sandy Flat Campground is set back from the Lower Kern River at an altitude of 2,300 feet near the town of Lake Isabella. Campsites are a short walk from the river, offering countless recreational opportunities for visitors.
Hiking, trout fishing, river wading and floating are popular pursuits. The Hobo Fishing Trail, a short walking trail, is nearby.
Campsites are set along one loop in largely open sites. Large boulders, relics of the ice age, are scattered throughout the campground. River access is in the day camp area. Drinking water, picnic areas and vault toilets are provided.
This facility is operated by Sequoia Recreation, a division of California Land Management and comments are welcome; comment forms are available from campground hosts or online.
The Sequoia National Forest, located at the southern end of the Sierra Nevada in central California, takes its name from the giant sequoia, the world's largest tree, which grows in more than 30 groves on the Forest's lower slopes.
The Forest comprises about 1.1 million acres, and elevations range from about 1,000 to 12,000 feet, creating precipitous canyons and mountain streams with spectacular waterfalls such as Salmon Creek Falls and Grizzly Falls.
The Giant Sequoia Mercantile offers a wide variety of books, maps, gifts, local art, camping supplies and other merchandise.
From Highway 99, take Highway 178 east for 4 miles. Turn right on Borel Road, then right onto the Old Canyon Road. Continue about 2 miles, then turn right into Sandy Flats Campground.
This was a great spot to visit. It lacks a bit of shade so if you mid summer it will be hot, we went the week of 7/26/21 and it was pretty hot. There was an annoying party but they left the next day. We spent the day at the river to cope with the heat. The river was a bit low but perfect to cope with the heat and not has dangerous. The host Bob was great and friendly, keeping the bathroom as clean has possible considering they are not running toilets and basically a hole in the ground lol. The upside there is fresh well water in a couple of spots around the park. The best secluded spots close to the bath rooms, water and the river beach are #32, 34, 33 and 30.
We love this camp ground! The spots are nice although some have permanent shade, ours did not but we brought our easy up. The day beach is a great place to swim and play for all ages with life vests. My kids really enjoyed jumping off of the rocks and floating down river. The camp host is very nice and even let my kids pick out a little toy.
Bathrooms are ok but what can you try expect when camping.
HOT SPRINGS IS NO MORE. I came out here hoping to head over to the mineral hot springs. Sadly the sheriffs department destroyed it.
There is another one I heard of but was not able to make it to. It’s on all trails under Remington hot springs. It had recently been commented on saying that there is only 1 pool currently. The rest are under water.
The river is running HIGH ! Not good for swimming or tubing. But very beautiful and can kind of put your feet in.
Camp ground is clean ! Good views. Fresh water ! It tastes good too.
Lake Isabella is moments away ! Good for boating and swimming.
We went up to kernville about 15 minute drive from sandy flats. Cute little town ! We enjoyed the kernville brewery. As well as a white water rafting ride with the south sierra company.
Would love to come back when the water is a little calmer.
My group and I stayed for 2 nights and had an amazing time! The views are beautiful, a quick walk to the river edge from our campaite and a major plus is the bathrooms were always stocked with TP 😆 The camp hosts were some of the best hosts I've met, super friendly and welcoming! I already have plans on returning with friends.
Thank you Kenny and Jackie for making our stay that much better!
