Description : Located on the Upper McCloud River at an elevation of 3800 feet, this is a small undeveloped camping area with 8 user-created sites and a vault toilet. No drinking water. No fee. Features : Algoma is the terminus of the McCloud River Trail, a distance of 12 miles from Lower Falls. This area receives less traffic than the more popular McCloud River Loop, offering a quieter riverside camping experience.
From the McCloud Ranger Station, turn left on SR 89. Drive 13 miles the turnoff for Algoma (Stouts Meadow) turn at the cross country skier sign. Turn right and go 1 mile to the campground.
Quite close to Mt Shastha & Burney falls. Near to small river, nice campgrounds. Not far from highway & paved road.
If you find a cairn (stacked rock hippie art), and it is not identifying a trailhead, or a marker for a turn on a trail, please knock it over. They are dangerous for people who actually use them, and could lead to someone getting lost, or worse, their death. No hippie rock art is worth someone dying.
A few spots with fire pits and camp tables. Restroom on site. More spaces down the road without tables or fire pits. Appears to be a logging road. Some phone reception. Beautiful location. Pack it in pack it out. #isamazingjourney
Perhaps my experience was unique to me. While the location and scenery, being so close to 89 and right by the Upper McCloud River, were fantastic, on the night I was there (a Thursday morning) logging trucks began coming up and down the road by the campsite non-stop from 3 am every five minutes until I left. Even with earplugs one cannot block out the sound of the trucks driving and the echo from up the road. I was alone in the campground but it could get crowded fast if there were other people. At any rate, it is a free campground and one cannot complain too much!
Cool little spot with a creek running through it. Pretty quiet. Not very leveled in some areas. But nice and quiet. Kind of hidden.
