Great spot to spend a quiet night. Especially in February when the campground is totally empty. No water, just indoor pit toilets but really well maintained. Each site has nice table, bbq, fire ring and light post.
There is about 8 drive in camp sites big enough for small RVs and 1 wheelchair accessible.
It is an interesting drive in as previous reviews noted. There is about a 5 minute drive in through a private residential area on a one lane (narrow, unpaved road) before reaching the campground.
Clean bathrooms with TP (Primitive), Grill and fire pit in each campground, bench, trash bins by the bathrooms (both small and large), and a easy driveway/parking lot for day parking.
It's about a 5-10 minute walk from the river itself
We surveyed the other campsites (Gladecreek, Grandview Sandbar, Stonecliff, and War Ridge); if you like more trees/closer proximity to the river, go check those ones out first before you settle on the campgrounds.
Overall, the experience was average to above average, as we did not have many trees to help us canopy (we used our own tarp) for the weeklong rain we had.
Don't forget to bring DEET bug spray!
For free camping this is a very nice campground. Make time to drive out and see New River Gorge Bridge and Visitor Center. Stayed for an overnight on our way back home. No internet!
Great free spot for car camping. A little far from anything, but worth the drive. Heard it can get rowdy because it’s free, but we were there in winter and we’re the only ones. You have a restroom and parking, and are very close to the River… you can hear it all night, but cannot camp right by the edge.
Quiet campground with a couple of moderately well maintained campsites (flattened dirt and gravel in marked out sites). Each had a fire pit, post, spot for a tent, and a picnic table. It wasn’t too busy since we were visiting right before the season kicked off (mid-May) but most people we saw stopped in for a night before leaving. The bathrooms were very clean but keep in mind, there are no sinks/running water. No campsites are directly by the river but it’s a close walk. Also, there is no cell service at the site.
Ultimately, a great spot to camp for free!
