Campsite: Wolfpen ATV Campground

Went during their offseason a couple weeks ago for what was supposed to be a 2 night stay. Saw on their website they had a general store, fuel for sale, friendly staff, and good reviews! So we were very excited! We have very limited time off because we work in the hospitality industry as well, running a motel 24 hours a day 5-6 days a week. Because of that I called the day I made the reservation to confirm it went through, and to confirm my ETA with them. We did not fuel up our UTV because their website said they sold fuel, and we had enough in our tow vehicle to make it with no stops. We arrived precisely when I told them we would be there, and nobody was there.

Campground was quite dark, nobody there to show us where to go despite me saying this is our first time there, or at wolfpen gap at all. One of the owners told me on the phone the cabin would be unlocked, with keys and all the extras we purchased waiting for us. After stumbling around in the dark for a while, we found the cabin! Jimmys hideaway, “closest to the bathrooms” (which I got specifically for my wife, her medical conditions cause her to go a lot). Come to find out the bathrooms were being torn down, so there was actually a further walk than advertised.

We get into our room and the cabin itself wasn’t the worst. Needs structural work though, the floor is extremely soft, and there’s a soft spot right next to the bed that felt like I was going through the floor entirely. Not too bad though, except none of our purchased stuff or even a key is in the room? We wanted to go riding, but definitely weren’t leaving our dogs and items unlocked in a new area. One of the owners (Alex) comes down from his house, and has me come to the office to get my own keys, map, and load my own firewood because they failed to do any of that prior to me checking in. Not great service so far, but hey, we are just glad to be there.

We went out on a night ride with some people from the park (friends of the owners) and with Alex the owner. Wasn’t too bad minus some heavy drinking from a few, which I personally find stupid to drink and ride. We get back, have dinner; and go to bed planning on a full day tomorrow because of rain coming late the next day. We get up at 7, get ready, and start getting our SxS ready. I noticed I needed fuel to last all day, so I went to the office at 8am. Nobody there. Called the number, no answer. Called and text both owners (they have their cells posted) no answers. Tried calling and texting multiple times between 7-10am with 0 response, they even started sending me to voicemail! 🤬

With our trip already 3 plus hours behind, I started going to other campers figuring out if there’s a trick or how do you get help around there. The friend of the owners (who was honestly the best person there, and ran the place more than the owners actually did) said he would try to contact them. Somehow, even though they wouldn’t answer a guests calls or texts, the other owner answers this guy almost immediately?!

The owner tells him to let us fuel up, and he will come by later for the money. No apology from the owner, didn’t even offer free fuel or a discount for taking up now 4-5 hours total of our ride time. We went out, had a GREAT time away from the camp (trails are state park, you DO NOT have to stay here to use them, trails are actually free!) except the owners failed to mention that almost all the trails leading to the mines, waterfalls, and all the spots you would want to go are closed this time of year. Yet another piece of info conveniently left out, despite me saying multiple times on the phone and our online reservation we have never ever been there before.

Showers in the other bath house were cold and nasty, literally nothing advertised was delivered. If this is how the owners themselves run it, we will NEVER be back and will NEVER recommend it. 2 weeks later and still no apology at all. Come to find out “they got too sauced”. I am on the clock 24 hours a day almost every day of the week, I have to wake up at all hours, and that’s just a motel!
