It's a heck of a drive when it's snowy or muddy, 10 months a year. In winter the Kortes road can be dangerous for the unprepared. There is no cell service, very few other cars. You go off the road you have to rescue yourself or be prepared to stay overnight in your truck. Lots of antelope, deer, cows--open range means they are on the road, some elk, an occasional bear, and Bighorns in the mountains. It might look good at Alcova but it's an exposed road with its own weather. Going up to the reservoir requires driving over Seminoe mountain. Snow can be deep and drifted, mud can be slicker than ice, and animals sometimes are suicidal. So why go to the small lake between Seminoe and Kortes dam? Because it's beautiful, never crowded, good fishing, good wildlife, and can be an adventure. The boat ramp is blocked by rock fall, you can carry in a kayak easily. Four wheel drive with good ground clearance is often needed especially in the winter. In the spring the ruts can be very deep, cars and small SUVs might high center. Be aware that locals drive fast, our trucks are already beat to death, and we use whatever lane is smoothest. Pull over and let us by, enjoy the scenery and don't worry about the locals passing you. You stand between us and beer at home so don't take offense, just pull over. If it helps, if we are in front it's less likely you will hit a large animal.
