Campsite: Herrington Manor State Park

We enjoyed a pleasant 3-day weekend here for our first stay. The cabin has a lot of charm and character. There is enough space for privacy between the cabins and the area was relatively quiet, even on a night when every sight was reserved.

There’s no master bedroom, which was not a problem for us. We just all went to bed at the same time.

Pluses: I love seeing the lake. My son caught a decent Northern Pike from the dock. The woods are brimming with deer and other creatures. Heard some exotic-sounding birds from our cabin deck.

Oakland is a neat country town, ready to serve visitors with a lot to eat, see, and do. The dog came along this time and loved joining us on a hike to the rock maze. Definitely check out the rock maze!

We enjoyed pizza at Brenda’s with a terrific view of the lake followed by a trip downhill on the alpine coaster and gem mining at Wisp Ski Resort.

Downside: (just one)

There are no outdoor fires permitted except in one of two community fire rings. They graciously stock each cabin with dry firewood, but only for the indoor fireplace inserts. I’m personally only familiar with traditional fireplaces without a door on the front, so bring pellets and kindling or you’ll be without a fire that night.

Question for the Ranger: Why aren’t campfire rings at each cabin? Who goes camping and does naturally think of burning a campfire. I’m just confused.
