Campsite: Sunnywoods Campground

We arrived at the general store to check in and found the store in complete disarray, empty coolers, shelves all taken down, no electricity and very dark. It reeked of cigarette smoke. The manager sat drinking beer at his table in the dark waiting for guests to arrive. We paid the cash for our reservation (no computer, no credit card machine, no formal paperwork, etc.) and followed through to a camp site. It does not feel like a campground…more just like you’re in a backyard. We found our spot and set up, ignoring the trash left in the firepits and pool that stunk and was full of black water. We quickly realized we were one of the few actual overnight guests, as most campers were being lived in and had boarded up windows. Those spaces looked like junkyards. Later, though we only had 4 people and tried to put our teenagers in a second tent, the manager told us we’d have to pay another $40. He told us it was a state rule, which isn’t true (We’ve camped avidly around the state for years and know the regs) and while he is in his right to charge whatever he wants, there was no way I was paying $80/night to stay next to a black pool and rotting trailers. We got our money back and left, drove the one mile to the state forest campground around the corner, paid our $20, put our tents back up, and had a campfire by other campers in a beautiful spot on the Platte River. Sunnywoods may work for a single dude that needs a place to crash before fishing as a last resort, but thats about the extent of what it provides. Go to the campground right around the corner instead. Half the price and provides a true camp experience without all the rundown yuck.
