Campsite: Sheps Canyon Recreation Area

Cabin was cleaned and easy to find within the park. The cabin bed mats were wiped down but smelled heavily of wet dog. So much so that the smell stuck on our blankets at the next campground. There was no information available for late check-in (arrived around 7:00 pm) and didn't know how to unlock cabin. Figured it out, but frustrating to not have anyone on-site to contact. The park is near another community living area that gets rather loud at night. The main campground bathrooms were maintained but very out of date. We've stayed at several South Dakota state parks and recreation areas and this one has been the least impressive. Site map showed the cabin was on water, but definitely was nowhere near water. Disappointed the maps and site weren't more current.

Campsite: Wind Creek Campground — Keyhole State Park

Visit August 2021, Cabin 1: Beautiful campground with amazing views of the reservoir all around. Very quiet with minimal human or animal noises. It was a bit of a drive (too far to walk) to the showers but very clean and in the open. There was an outhouse nearby that we could use throughout the day.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Showers were coin operated. Bring quarters or cash for exchange machine.

We stayed in a cabin on the shoreline. Very peaceful and the perfect location to look out at the water or walk the shoreline. We swam at the beach for awhile and were the only people there. The sunsets from the beach were SPECTACULAR! We really enjoyed our stay and highly recommend this state park!

Nearest gas station is a long drive away too. Come prepared with enough ice or build the drive to get ice into your itinerary.
