Although i did not do any camping, the area does have some nice fields with roads that lead to the Savage river. I saw quite a few people who had set up their tents, canopies, and grills all ready to relax and fish. There is access to the upper Savage Reservoir and a lot of campsite campers had kayaks.
This area - the upper stream that flows into the Savage Reservoir - is just beautiful water for fly or ultralight trout fishing. There are pulloffs nearby with DNR fishing information.
If you live to catch trout, start here! The water just below the dam is pristine fly fishing water. You won't want to fish anywhere else. The area downstream of the kayak take-out has beautiful pools loaded with trout. There is a clean, bathroom available year-round and ample parking. Make the trip downstream to check out the famous "Blue Hole" fishing area. Nearly ALL of the Maryland State records for trout (less rainbow trout) have come from the North Branch of the Potomac.
