A must stay place in Denali. At mile 29 of the Parks Rd. it is a slice of heaven in the wilderness with the comforts of home in an RV. Generator hours are limited but we felt bad turning ours on because it was so quiet and peaceful.
Behind the campground is a river bed and glacial run off area. Within 10 minutes of arriving we were ready to explore. We headed out to photograph the beautiful vistas and were treated to the most unbelievable experience.
My son is a photographer and he had my daughter off in the distance for a picture. All of a sudden she turned around and was walking very quickly back to us. She said something was coming in the distance. When we looked up it was a Caribou running frantically down the edge of the river. Three of us started to run back to the campground but my photographer son who was crouched by the river was just clicking away. Even with prompting from his brother he wasn't moving. The Caribou was still a ways away and after all of our noise he suddenly cut left and ran across the river and kept going down the other side of it. He was by himself but looked like he had been running for awhile. When I looked back up the river I saw a black wolf who had been chasing the Caribou! We learned later about a mile up the river there was a wolf den and this was the alpha male who was very rare to see. We felt so fortunate that within the first 30 minutes of arriving at Teklanika we had had the most amazing wildlife sighting it was almost a mic drop moment.
There are some hills around with trails and we were able to hike up them and get an amazing vantage point on the area. About 3 miles up the Park road is a bridge and close to the location of the wolf den. We walked and then hopped on a bus to bring us the rest of the way there. Great for pictures and not a wolf in sight. We started to walk back and then hopped on a bus again for the final miles. On our last day we again went out to the river and saw another caribou running. There are also amazing sunsets (of sorts) with the glowing peaks in the setting sun.
