My husband and I are retired and are full time rving. We have been on the road since last November, and have stayed in Florida, SC and NC at Thousand Trail campgrounds. We are not new to camping, we have been camping for 25 years. We are Thousand Trails Elite members and have stayed at Lake Gaston two times. The first time went ok. However, recently left there this past Thursday after 10 day stay and I'm not sure if I will ever stay there again. Couldn't wait to leave there. As they say "Never say Never", we might stay in a pinch but never for more than a day or two if passing through. Worst camping experience I ever had in 25 years. We were treated unfairly in my opinion, not going into details because the managers and one of their employees knows what happened. We stayed in a nonsewer site because they had no sewer sites. We have a blue tank but couldn't use it because the site was so unlevel, our front jacks were all the way down. We did manage after two days to move to another nonsewer site and were able to empty our tanks. They charge $20.00 to empty your tank and we have two gray, two black so it would have been costly for them to empty them for us. We live on a fixed income and have to watch our pennies. Even with conserving water, we had to empty two times in 10 days. I'm not a snob , but I didn't buy a camper with a full bathroom that I keep clean to go to a bathhouse and shower in someone else's dirt. There is no wifi, and couldn't even use our hot spot where we were in the campground. The camp sites need some maintenance, we had to pick up trash in our site, the pine needles are 10 inches thick and trees need trimmed back. They keep the grass mowed at the entrance, but I don't think they do much in the area near the lake. There are hundreds of permanent campers so it's no wonder there's not many sites left for those occasional campers coming in. And some of their site moving rules have no logic. The pool is clean and the trading post is nice. The lake is pretty. Some of the employees need better customer service skills and that's all I'll say about that. Would I upgrade my Thousand Trails membership, No. Would I recommend someone buy one, maybe. But read all the fine print. I do not need the typical response from anyone from this campground, because there is nothing you can say to change my opinion of this campground. Have a blessed day.
