Campsite: COE Cordell Hull Lake Salt Lick Creek Campground

Beautiful campsite but a few important things to note:

If you are a tent camper, I would highly recommend that you call them directly and ask them which campsites have the softer areas for you to set up a tent. Also make sure it's a single drive way so you have privacy.

We stayed in spot 100, and although it was a lovely, close view of the lake, (and very close to the bathrooms and showers,) it was literally attached via one round driveway and right next to the next site. It could be super fun if you want to use two campsites next to each other as a family, but if you're just tent camping on your own, it's uncomfortable. We were very thankful nobody was camping there that night, or we would not have had much privacy. The spot #99 next to site 100 is more private.

Another issue with site 100 is that while there is a grill over the fire ring, it was the only campsite that I saw that didn't also have a separate grill. The very edge of the site did have a border that had fallen off the little hill edge, and was kind of sliding down toward the lake so maybe it fell and was later removed?

The most important issue with this site to us as tent campers was the hard and jagged nickel and quarter sized gravel. This was the only area provided that we could actually put up a tent. We even had thick gym mats under our sleeping bags, which helped, but we could still feel the gravel.

Not only that, but it was impossible to get the tent stakes in the ground. The ground has never been this hard for us at other sites... The stakes kept bending and after a long time, we couldn't get most in the ground more than an inch or so. As we were walking around, I did notice some other sites had either much smaller, smoother gravel that would be easier to tent camp on, or better still-- I also saw some alternative spots that a tent could be set up that were much softer. Just call them before you book to pick a good spot so you can be comfortable in a tent. It honestly doesn't make sense to me that the system they have online identifies the site we used as a tent camping site. I feel there should be some warning that there is really hard gravel in the only spot that you're able to put up a tent.

The bathrooms are very clean, the lakeviews are gorgeous, the cement dock is fun to sit on, and as other reviews are saying, you will NOT have cell phone service. IN FACT, you will want to get your GPS to load using the Wi-Fi at the entrance before you try to drive home, because you will not be getting reception for quite a while and won't be able to GPS home unless you start it on the Wi-Fi, I think.

There are lots of mosquitoes and we saw some yellow jackets when we started cooking our breakfast, so bring your bug spray and a citronella candle!

Overall, we would still recommend the campsite! Just call them first if you are tent camping to find the right spot :-)

PS- on the drive home, definitely check out the lookout spot on the side of the road! It's lovely.
