Campsite: BLM Mt. Blanca Rd. Dispersed

Your experience at this site depends on your expectations. For wildlife watchers, this is an amazing place at the right time. To see shorebirds, go in late July and early August. Bring bug spray as the site has ample deer flies. This site is relatively undeveloped. There are no picnic tables, no campground, and few trees for shade. Expect hot sun, bugs, birds, frogs, salamaders, and fish. The site has fish ponds for trout or bass and bluegill fishing. You can swim in the ponds but it isn’t a developed site and you might be eaten alive by bugs. There are 7 parking areas and a well maintained main road. You have to walk from the parking areas. This is like a living laboratory where you can see a diversity of wildlife, but you aren’t guided or pampered. It is about exploring. The site is closed from Feb. 15-July 15 to protect nesting birds. It is open for waterfowl hunting during regular seasons.
