Campsite: Gouldsburg County Park

I found the park " by accident", but it was a happy accident. I was travelling by motorcycle from Victoria BC to Toronto Ontario in mid May of 2017, and was as usual 'shun piking' that is to say, I was avoiding any big fast roads in order to see the land at a pace that would let me remember my jouney and take me places that were different enough from each to not blend into a blur of sameness. I was riding east towards a thunder storm approaching from the southeast. So when a sign pointed to camping to the north a few miles I hastened thither to beat the storm. What a charming and hospitable place it turned out to be. The campground 'host' bent the rules a bit and suggested I set up my tent for the single night I planned to stay under the extra protection of the group picnic shelter which was not booked to be used until the weekend.

So when the furious (but short)storm hit, I enjoyed its tempest safe and dry and pretty well protected even from its winds. I was provided with clean fresh and abundant water and facilities for a shower and a toilet. My picnic table in the shelter let me cook and dine right by my tent. I needed nothing more. I left the next morning having paid the modest fee on the honour system. The hospitality of the host and the conviviality of conversations I had with several of the campgrounds longer staying visitors remain a good memory these many years later. It's not luxury camping with all the bells and whistles, but lovely small and miles away from the howl of an interstate. I slept to the sound of the rippling current of the nearly overflowing river and quiet voices and laughter from campsites quite far from mine. It was, despite the storm that drove me there, pretty well the nicest night of my ten day trip.
