Campsite: Salida - Mt. Shavano KOA

We've been to our fair share of koas and campgrounds, even multiple in a row on this road trip, so I was surprised to be disappointed by this one. It's supposedly new to their portfolio and perhaps they're still transitioning some things.

The worst part about this place is the bathroom. Kid you not, one bathhouse to service the entire campground including all cabins and tent area. That's not a problem if it's big enough, but this has 3 women's toilets and 3 women's showers which sometimes means a line. The biggest problem is the location which is down the hill for the tents, past both inner roads and down by the reception. It was so far, and downhill, that during the night my mother felt so uncomfortable walking that far in the dark that she started up the car and drove there - twice. I cannot imagine other neighbors were thrilled by this, but she clocked it at least 0.3 miles to the bathroom. Sorry, not ok. And we were much closer than all the tent campers! But this also meant alllll the tenters were walking down past our cabin constantly because that's where their bathroom and kitchen is.

We booked a cabin which we often do at Koas. The bunk bed was strangely very low, with the gap between bottom and top so small that I felt as if I had to crawl in a cave. Unlike other koas, there was no mini fridge here which is fine of course for camping, had i known that. The tent campers path goes directly behind cabin 1 with a bright lamp so you'll have people just inches from your window. The inner road is so close to the front door of the cabin row that you're right up in their dust with not much of a terrace space. There is a table and benches to the left of the cabin to use with a campfire. But that combined with the bathroom situation for 104 bucks a night, no thanks.

Upside, they have a community room with books you can hang out in. The store is well outfitted and the staff is friendly and helpful when they're there.

Downside, we arrived after 6 pm so they left our booking in a tray at the front with our name. Unfortunately someone else just took it so we had to find out from other neighbors how to find and access the bathroom with a code, get the wifi etc. But the lady had called before she left her shift to inform us where to find the key in our cabin, which we appreciated.

There also seems to be a dilapidated pool but it's closed off by a fence. Perhaps this will be repaired at some stage.

I would not stay here again unless I had a camper with it's own toilet. Then, the location makes it epic. The views are sweeping and it's right on the road outside of Salida which is very convenient.
