Campsite: Exception Ranch

Stayed here during the largest fire in state history at the time, the rodeo-chedaski fire, in 2002. Although it was some 21 years ago, I still remember it like it was last week. The hospitality shown was amazing, the cabins were spacious and top notch, clean, and even somewhat luxurious! The scenery was amazing, despite the wicked smoke and fire raging just some dozens of miles away (we evacuated the show low/pinetop/lakeside area to this area, fearing the entire town was going to burn down). It felt more like a vacation than an emergency situation as we were "stranded" for over a week, over the mountain range awaiting the fate of our town and our homes! Thankfully the fire amazingly stopped short, almost like a wall of supernatural force held it back from rushing through the show low and surrounding area...though many lost homes to the west of there, just on the outskirts of town where the flames suddenly seemed to halt (felt like the pillar of cloud or something from the Bible, or Gandalf saying "thou (you) shall not pass!". We even got to see and shake President GW Bush's hand when he made a visit to the small town of Eager/springerville nearby! The 10 days we spent here was like home away from home and we were almost sad to leave. There was all kinds of fun things to do, though it all seems a blur now. It was a fairly stressful time, but I remember the stay fondly despite the circumstances.

I know my review isn't 100% about the place, but the background info to me only adds to the warmth I felt from this place. I happened to be mapping out something near Arizona and decided to "look up" my old stomping grounds from the early 2000s and I was curious if I could find the place we stayed. Sure enough! This was it. And while I'm sure the management gave us a discount due to the circumstances, the cost was well worth it..both for that instance especially, but also for any type of family vacation or get away! The ski slopes from the Indian reservation (and Honda casino) also isn't too far away (maybe an hour?) And was a true hidden gem that rivaled most other ski slopes in CO and elsewhere!

Hope this review helps at least 1 person who takes the time to see what others say. More negative reviews seem to be posted than positives and ours was most definitely positive! Despite 21 years of time that's passed, looking at the pictures here of the cabins and ranch takes right back to that time! Doesn't look like too much has changed (and when it was a fond memory, that's truly amazing!). If you're on the fence about a stay here, just go for it...I don't think you'd regret it!

Ps. This area of Arizona in the White Mountains I've heard others say is "God's country" and while I can't speak for God on this, I do share a lot of that sentiment. The white mountains of AZ are an amazing place that I'll always hold dear, having spent 3 years there back in the day. Whether you're a native of the area or from another state coming to this area, this place is well worth it imho :)
