Le Page Park sits on the John Day River just before it flows into the Columbia River about two hours east of Portland, OR. There is a day use area and a campground area. The day use area has a beautiful green lawn with grills beside picnic tables as well as a few tables under small shelters. That portion of the park has a boat ramp as well as boat trailer parking and a small but nice playground structure. There is a coarse sand beach bordering a slight cove in the river as well as both the day use and campground. We stayed two nights in the campground. Unlike the day use section, the campground has no grass - just dried weeds and gravel that was unsightly as well as unpleasant for our dog’s walks. The campground was clean and all sites have a view of the river and the wind turbine topped surrounding hills. There were postings that the river water had E. coli count too high for swimming AND that drinking water should be boiled as it’s ecological count was also high. We should have been notified of this by the ranger as we entered. Bottom line is that day use area is very nice for picnics and boating (but not swimming at this time). The campground is okay but we’ll look for a different one the next time we’re in the area.
