Windy Pass Cabin is a neat forest cabin amongst the meadows of Windy Pass. A 2.5 mile hike from Upper Portal Trailhead, this cabin kept me and my dad dry over a rainy night. Because of the rain, I can’t attest to the views (I hear they are stunning), but keeping warm to a wood fire while listening to the rain was a charming experience.
The cabin is fairly large, with one large room and a loft. The main room contains a wood stove, a cabinet with cookware (pots, skillet, plates, silverware, etc.), a table with four chairs and a set of bunks. The loft is accessed by a ladder and has two cots overlooking the main room. The outhouse is due west by a few hundred feet behind some trees (exit the porch and go straight). There is no woodpile, so expect to spend a good amount of time refilling the wood bin. Good saws and a slightly dull splitter are provided.
