This place was mostly great, with a few things keeping it from being a solid 5 stars...
- Traveling by car within the park is annoying, especially for large family gathering where you've got different campsites all over the place. All road are single-lane one-ways, with nowhere to pull off, and few places to park. Seems like this issue arises from trying to cram as many campsites back-to-back as possible.
It'd be nice to see a couple of parking areas here and there, or to cut the length of the roadway in half by adding a perpendicular street down the center. If you've got more than one vehicle per campsite, or you're trying to drive to visit a family member on a different end of the park, you're not going to be able to park very easily, and it's gonna take you 15 minutes to get there.
- The check-in process for cabins was lazy. I've been a hundreds of hotels and dozens of cabins, and they always let you check in early if your cabin is completed. This place forces you to wait until 3:00 p.m. no matter what, which can be troublesome when a bunch of your family already has campsites from the day before and you don't have anywhere to put your stuff or park so you can comfortably join them.
Just give cleaning staff a walkie-talkie, and check the sites off of a list as they are cleaned. This way people can check in prior to 3:00 p.m. Not difficult; everywhere does this.
- The bugs were terrible. Lots of standing water for breeding. I've been outside most of the summer, and this was the first place I've had mosquito or fly problems. This place has them in droves. We had, not even kidding, a hundreds of flies swarming us as we were serving food. And if you're sitting outside anywhere near dusk or nighttime, you're going to get eaten alive by mosquitoes.
- There were groundhogs everywhere. This means there are holes everywhere. My daughter tripped in one when it was dark and was hurt pretty badly. Something's got to be done about these critters.
Other than that, the park is very well-maintained with a ton of stuff for families to do. We'll definitely be back, and I hope they'll address some of these issues before then!!
