I did not enjoy my stay here. I hate to say it because I have always loved the Canaan area. We were able to get a "suite" with a special late fall discount package, even with the discount it wasn't worth it. They are clever in not showing some photos of the suites, maybe that would save someone some money. The "balcony" has a great view of a pavilion rooftop and outdoor pool. They had a large bonfire going on Thursday night (but not any of the other weekend nights?) so the whole hotel reeked of smoke the whole weekend. Probably the most frustrating thing was the very clear priority the hotel and staff gave to the conference guests. One organization had about 200 guests in attendance, including many small children. The pool wasn't monitored, rules were not enforced, children were running around in the bar. Even the restaurant was suffering from the group's attendance, with one of the staff telling me "the large group gets priority this morning so breakfast is very very limited" I am sure if you have gotten this far you are thinking "wow this guy is entitled" but for 700 dollars I would've really liked to have enjoyed myself. The fireplace didn't work, the beds were not comfortable, the chair lift was broken, half the arcade/vending machines were broken, the staff was curt and stressed out, and the public spaces were continually littered with trash from the conference group. The hotel is due for a serious upgrade to get it into the 21st century. WV state lodges have always really impressed me, but this one, I will not be returning. Look for other alternatives in this area, the extra price is worth it.
