About Campground

Established in 1935, this area contains a unique canyon-land environment. The canyon cuts through the Mogollon Rim which marks the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau. It winds for 20 miles along Sycamore Creek and at places stretches 7 miles from rim to rim. Wind and water have exposed 7 geological associations of plants and animals set in a spectacular setting of red sandstone, white limestone, and brown lava. Camping is limited by the often unreliable water sources. There are 13 maintained trails within this wilderness: #52, #54, #61, #66, #68, #117, #9017 Sycamore Canyon Wilderness on Wilderness.net The USFS Wilderness Stewardship brochure explains more about designated Wilderness and how you can become involved in helping care for this precious resource.

Went there this past weekend. Beautiful yet easy to do hike along the canyon floor that follows the river. Not too busy and hopefully will stay that way.

Sycamore is a small canyon compared to the Grand Canyon, but still a beautiful place. The access roads to the trailhead is grated. You don't need 4WD to get there unless you have steady rain or snow. There are maps posted directing you on the short, easy hike to the rim vista from the trailhead.

Nice day hike. Only a 20 minute drive from I-40 and Garland Prairie Rd exit. No facilities there, just wilderness. No way into the canyon from this area either.

This area is great. Being in Sycamore Canyon Wilderness is like being in a miniature Grand Canyon. The 2020 Rafael fire did some damage in regards to flooding events, so the streams aren't *quite* the same with a lot of down debris, but it's still a great place. The Parsons trail is mild overall, with the heavy breathing part being the short switchbacks climbing back out (not that bad if you're able bodied). **Always bring more water than you think you'll need!**

Avoid the afternoon/weekend crowds that will show up at Parsons for the swimming hole by going on a week day or SUPER early in the AM. This is not a flip flop hike, so be sure to bring your tennis shoes!
