Mammoth Lakes Ranger District is located in the northern half of Inyo National Forest, and is centered around the town of Mammoth Lakes, CA. While known for winter sports, it is also a mecca for mountain biking and fishing enthusiasts when the snow melts. Hiking and equestrian trails go into wilderness areas of Sierra Nevada.
Very scenic yellow spot camping spot at end of road. Only accessible by 4wd. Last stretch is up steep hill and stock 4wd vehicles my struggle. There are multiple camping spots in this area, if the main one is taken. Road continues for a bit, but ends. Closest reliable water source would be at the Cold Creek yellow spot site down the hill. Both of these sites have a lot of flies.
Lots of room. Need high clearance and 4x4 to get there. Had 5g at the site with Verizon.
Great place to get away from it all. The last part of the trail gets very technical with big ruts and boulders but the fantastic thing about that is , it limits the amount of people or vehicles up there. We went up there for 3 days and nights packed in and packed out. The weather changed on one day and it snowed on us it was beautiful. Best place for Overlanders.
