The John W. Flannagan Dam & Reservoir Area boasts an expansive lake nestled in the rolling green Cumberland Mountains of southwest Virginia, offering visitors an oasis of recreation in the summer months. The nearby dam, built primarily for flood control for the Cranesnest and Pound Rivers, creates a breathtaking lake that is maintained at nearly 1,400 feet above sea level. This facility is an ideal spot for picnicking, water activities and hiking. Campgrounds with electric hook up options, bath houses, playgrounds, launch ramps and picnic shelters with grills, electrical hookups, a playground, and horseshoe pits provide an ideal location for parties and other get-togethers.
Pound River Campground access road is a winding narrow one-lane road. There are several pull-offs along the way to aid in passing oncoming traffic. Due to the river on one side and a rock cliff on the other, the road cannot be widened.
From Clintwood Main Street, turn on to Brush Creek Rd., State Rte 631 2.2 miles. Turn right onto State Rte 754 for 1.1 miles. Turn right onto Pound River Campground Rd.
Very Nice and Quiet. Not to close together and the Host is really nice. Bathhouse was cleaned daily and would and will go back again soon.
Great place to just ride thru
Missed most of the season due to flooding but was relaxing just getting out and enjoying the fall colors
Our favorite place to camp. The only thing wrong with it now is the people who have always camped there all these years can't get in to camp since people from out of town reserve the camping spots ahead of local people. The only other thing I can say against it is they desperately need an exit road out as it has been known to get flooded and I would feel much safer getting camper's boat's out of there when there is flooding risk. The road in and out at this time is right along side of the Pound River.
Great campground with excellent fishing access to the flannaghan lake.
An absolute incredible place! The host keeps the campsite and facilities so clean! Tons of fish to catch (Walleye, Bass, Blue Gill), and town is a short trip away. My buddy and I rode out Adventure Bikes there (motorcycle) and it was a great find camping for the night. Highly recommended....great grass for a tent by the side of the river. We will be back.
