About Campground

Dispersed camping is allowed on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Forest Service (USFS) lands without a permit, but it is recommended that campers obtain a map that shows current property boundaries. Please contact the BLM , (541) 573-4400 or (541) 416-6700, or the USFS, (541) 575-3000 or (541) 416-6500, for more information.

While camping is not allowed within the three units of the monument, there are many nearby campgrounds. Some have full service amenities, some are quiet and remote, some are in the forest, and some are right on the John Day River.

The Painted Hills are something to experience in person!! All the colors of the hills, the wildflowers, reading the history of this place and what it used to be.. there is about 5 trails in the area with one of them being a hike to the top overlooking the area. Have fun explorer.

What a beauty! Very unique experience seeing the colorful landscape. Definitely a must visit spot if you are travelling to Bend or east of Oregon. This popular spot is just 90 miles away from Bend. There are 4-5 hiking trails with beautiful views and all can be accessed through paved gravel roads inside the park.

Amazing experiences with great hikes and information on the land. It was definitely an incredible experience and I’m so grateful we are still able to go up there at all and enjoy its beauty. I think it’s posting my pics twice but just twice the beauty.

This is an amazing place which you shouldn't miss! A little far but worth it. The whole area is kind of small, but absolutely worth the effort to visit. The view is so colorful and yes, the hills are really like being painted. It has better, more and vivid color than Badlands or Death Valley, and it looks better too. One of the best spots actually is outside the park, on the way to there. It's fully open and free, but please, do not step on them and keep them impacted, don't ruin this natural beauty please...

Great views of the natural phenomenon .

Colored mountains looks beautiful and are a unique landscape.

The road to the overlook needs some work though.
